Hammocking

Dedicated areas

Tips for hammocking

  • Minimize chafing of tree bark by distributing weight across a large surface area. "Tree-friendly" suspension is required — use webbing or straps 1 inch diameter or greater or use padding between the tree and rope (use commercial products, strips of cardboard one-quarter-inch thick or greater, or scraps of carpet). Hammocks should not be suspended to trees using rope alone.
  • Select large, live, healthy-looking trees that are large enough to bear weight. Trunks should be at least 6 inches in diameter from where you plan to hang your hammock.
  • Hammocks cannot block trails.
