Safe Sleep and Training Requirements
The importance of safe sleep for infants
State law requires licensed child care providers to:
- Place an infant on their back to sleep in an approved crib for every sleep.
- Place infant on a firm mattress with a tight-fitting sheet, with nothing else in the crib.
- Obtain annual Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) training for self and all substitutes, assistants and helpers.
- Conduct monthly crib inspections and annual recall checks.

Training requirements
The Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families requires trainings for licensure and to continue providing child care.
New applicants must complete mandatory pre-service training prior to licensure. Current license holders and those who work within a child care program must have a total of 16 hours of training each calendar year.
