Discharge Documents and Military Service Records
Requesting a DD-214 and military service records
For most benefits, veterans need to provide military personnel records. They can receive free copies of their discharge documents and other military and medical records by requesting them online at eVetRecs from the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC). To complete the request online, users are required to sign-in to ID.me.
Additional ways to request your DD-214:
- Completing Form SF-180 and mailing or faxing the request.
- Contacting Dakota County Veteran Services at 651-554-5601 or vets@co.dakota.mn.us for assistance.
- Contact the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.
National Guard Discharge (NGB-22)
Members of the National Guard can request their records from the Minnesota National Guard website.
Reserve members
Members of a reserve component will only receive a DD-214 when serving on active duty orders other than for training. Those who served 20 or more qualifying years of service receive a retirement order. Inactive training periods (i.e. regular scheduled drills or annual training) does not qualify a DD-214. Members of the National Guard receive a NGB-22 as their discharge documentation.
