Family Home Visits

Trained nurses and health professionals work for you.

At Dakota County Public Health, you choose what is best for your family. Our services are free. We respect you, your family and your culture.

​Our public health nurses will meet with you until your baby turns 2 years old. We will connect you to health and benefit programs, measure your baby's growth and help you find community resources. Visits can be in-person or virtual.

Home visiting benefits

​When you are pregnant, we monitor your health and share what to expect with your baby. We will:

  • Teach you about fetal development, breastfeeding and nutrition.
  • Help you prepare for​ labor and delivery.
  • Answer questions about what to expect in the hospital.

As your baby grows, we measure your baby's physical and emotional growth. We give you tools and resources. We will:

  • Weigh and measure your baby.
  • Check your baby's development (how they play, talk and grow).
  • Discuss car seats, vaccines and other child safety best practices.

On your parenting journey, we empower you and your family. We connect you to health and benefit programs. We will:

  • Find health care, schools, job options and additional resources.
  • Create a safe and healthy home.

Dakota County is continuing to provide family home visits. Telehealth and outdoor visits are also available.

Mothers and Babies Program

Safe and Healthy ​​Start

Safe and Healthy Start supports you in your journey to parenthood and recovery. If you live in Dakota County, are pregnant and interested in receiving support for a substance-free pregnancy, our skilled staff can help. Together, we will identify your strengths and reach your goals for your growing family. Our services are always free and voluntary.
