Victim Impact Statements

A victim impact statement is a written or spoken statement about how a crime has affected the victim, the victim's family or the community. It's the opportunity to share — in your own words — the emotional, physical and financial impact of the crime. Sharing your story is voluntary, but it can be an important part in healing and recovery.

Victim impact statements can be presented in person during sentencing or submitted to the judge in writing before the hearing. It helps the court understand the full effect of the crime and will help the judge make an informed sentencing decision.
