Service of Legal Documents
Sheriff's Office can serve legal and court documents
The Dakota County Sheriff's Office Civil Division is responsible for the handling and serving of legal and court documents. Civil documents are served on behalf of individuals, private attorneys, the court, and county departments and agencies.
Such documents include:
- Summonses
- Dissolutions of marriage
- Notices
- Civil and criminal subpoenas
- Evictions
- Orders, which include domestic abuse
Attorney's Office accepts civil summonses for the county
All civil summonses directed at county must be delivered in person to the Dakota County Attorney's Office.
This is a change to the Minnesota Rules of Civil Procedure Rule 4.03 (e) (1). It does not affect the service of summons or other types of legal documents such as subpoenas on county employees.
Service instructions
- Go to the Dakota County Attorney's Office located at:
Judicial Center
1560 Highway 55, Second Floor, Hastings
- All visitors must pass through point of entry screening before entering the building. For details, visit the Security Screening web page.
- The front desk employee or other staff members are authorized to accept service of a civil summons on behalf of the county attorney.
- The Attorney's Office can't accept service for Dakota County employees listed as defendants on the civil summons unless confirmed by the employee to accept service on their behalf.
Acknowledgement of service
If requested, the Attorney's Office will issue the server an acknowledgement of service upon receiving the civil summons.
