The vehicle title serves as proof of ownership for your motor vehicle. It is needed when transferring ownership, including adding or removing a lien holder

Walk-ins available

Service and license centers are open for walk-ins. However, making an appointment is recommended.​

Buyer and seller requirements

Buyers must bring:

  • The title certificate or Manufacturer's Statement of Origin
  • A driver's license or state ID (These are needed for ownership transfers or first-time registration.) 

Sellers must complete their section of the title or Manufacturing Statement of Origin labeled “By the Sellers." The section includes:

  • Signatures
  • Date of sale 
  • Odometer statement 
  • Damage disclosure 
  • Certified tax paid letter from the county (for mobile homes)​

Minnesota residents must also provide: 

  • Name of insurance company
  • Policy number
  • Policy expiration date 
  • Motorcycle engine number​

Fees

Fees depend on the type and year of the vehicle.

Payment options​

You can pay with cash, check, money orders, and credit or debit cards (Discover, Visa or MasterCard). Credit and debit card payments have a 2.15-percent convenience fee.
