Before you apply or renew in person

To make the process faster, follow these steps before you come in person to renew your driver's license or apply for REAL/Enhanced ID:

  1. Pre-apply on the Driver and Vehicle Servi​ces website.
  2. Reserve an appointment online.

Walk-ins available

Service and license centers are open for walk-ins. However, making an appointment is encouraged.

Go to the Service & License Cen​ters page for business hours. REAL and Enhanced ID applications must be completed 30​ minutes prior to closing​.

Same-day license service at Lakeville License Center ​ended on Oct. 31, 2025.

Renewals and duplicates

Dakota County can renew or replace a Minnesota driver's license or ID.​

Renewals require the applicant to take a vision test and have a photo taken. Proper identification must be present.

Duplic​ates are issued to replace a lost or stolen valid driver’s license or identification c​ard. They may also be issued for address and name changes.

No knowledge or road testing​

Dakota County License Centers do not offer knowledge or road testing exams. To schedule an exam appointment, go to the​ Driver and Vehicle Servic​es website.​

Fees

Renewal: Varies by license class and endorsements
Duplicate standard or REAL driver's license: $26​
Duplicate enhanced driver's license: $41​

Payment options

We accept cash, check, money orders, and credit or debit cards (Discover, Visa or MasterCard). A 2.15-percent convenience fee applies when paying with a credit and debit card for this DVS-related service.
