Driver's Licenses
Before you apply or renew in person
To make the process faster, follow these steps before you come in person to renew your driver's license or apply for REAL/Enhanced ID:
- Pre-apply on the Driver and Vehicle Services website.
- Reserve an appointment online.
Walk-ins available
Service and license centers are open for walk-ins. However, making an appointment is encouraged.
Hours
Go to the Service & License Centers page for business hours. REAL and Enhanced ID applications must be completed 30 minutes prior to closing.

Same-day license service at Lakeville License Center ended on Oct. 31, 2025.
Renewals and duplicates
Dakota County can renew or replace a Minnesota driver's license or ID.
Renewals require the applicant to take a vision test and have a photo taken. Proper identification must be present.
Duplicates are issued to replace a lost or stolen valid driver’s license or identification card. They may also be issued for address and name changes.
No knowledge or road testing
Dakota County License Centers do not offer knowledge or road testing exams. To schedule an exam appointment, go to the Driver and Vehicle Services website.
Fees
Renewal: Varies by license class and endorsements
Duplicate standard or REAL driver's license: $26
Duplicate enhanced driver's license: $41
Payment options
We accept cash, check, money orders, and credit or debit cards (Discover, Visa or MasterCard). A 2.15-percent convenience fee applies when paying with a credit and debit card for this DVS-related service.
