Youth Well-Being Network

The Youth Well-Being Network addresses risk factors contributing to adverse childhood experiences, substance misuse and overdoses, and suicidality in Dakota County's youth and young adults ages 10–24. The goal is to ensure that protective factors are in place, so this target group can thrive.

Current situation and why this matters

Below are current mental health and youth challenges in Dakota County:

  • 1 in 5 young people are struggling with mental health challenges.
  • Nearly 1 in 4 ninth graders report binge drinking.
  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 10–24.

Our community's strength depends on supporting our youth:

  • Every young person deserves a chance to grow up healthy and safe.
  • Mental health, substance use and suicide can impact any family.
  • Early intervention prevents years of potential suffering.
  • When our youth are hurting, our entire community feels the impact.
  • The cost of doing nothing is simply too high.

Joining the network

Membership includes organizations, institutions, youth and adult community members from Dakota County. Individuals with lived experience are encouraged to participate to provide insight. People with lived experience are those who have gained knowledge of the subject matter through direct, first-hand involvement in everyday events. This is instead of through assumptions and constructs from other people, research or media.

Through this commission, each member can:

  • Save lives through your voice and ideas.
  • Connect with others who are passionate about youth support.
  • Create larger, systemic changes through collective action.
  • Make a meaningful difference, even with just a few hours of involvement.
  • Potentially be the person who helps a young person choose life.
