Tax-Forfeited Property
Property becomes tax-forfeited when there are unpaid delinquent taxes. Forfeited land may be repurchased, sold or managed for public benefit.
Auction information
No properties are currently for sale over the counter.
Auction are held at the Administration Center in Hastings. Bid number registration is from 9-9:45 a.m. with the auction starting at 10 a.m.

Each property must be classified as either conservation or non-conservation at a public meeting.
The meeting is held at the Administration Center in Hastings. You have the right to provide written or oral comments.

Surplus funds
Any money remaining after delinquent taxes, penalties, interest, costs, and expenses have been paid is considered surplus funds. This money can be claimed by former owners and interested parties.
There are no surplus funds available to claim. When surplus funds become available, we will post a list of eligible properties on this page.
Research before buying - property sold “as is"
All sales are final, and no refunds or exchanges are permitted.

- For general land information, go to Property Information Search.
- Most liens and mortgages are canceled at the time of forfeiture. Except federal and state tax liens. Direct questions to Dakota County Property Records at records@co.dakota.mn.us.
- To see if the property is buildable or for zoning questions, check with the city or township. For city or township contact information, go to city or township.
- Check for potential environmental concerns. To ask question about specific parcel go to the Brownfields and Contaminated Sites page.
- For information on septic systems or well requirement, go to the Selling Property page.
You are advised to contact an attorney about questions on a specific parcel and your plans for it.
Verify special assessments
When a property forfeits, any special assessment is canceled. The city or township can choose to reassess a canceled assessment.
Information on canceled special assessments will be available 30 days before an auction. Refer to the Public Notice document in the Auction Information section for details.
