Borrow and Return Materials
Borrow materials
Individuals can borrow up to 99 items at a time. Most items can be checked out for three weeks with some exceptions.
Exceptions include:
- DVDs: 1 week
- High-demand Items: 2 weeks
- Lucky U's: 1 week
- Book Group Kits: 6 weeks
- Launchpads: 1 week
How to check out materials
- Scan your library barcode from your card or the library app, you may also type your barcode number in on the screen.
- Place your items face up on the checkout pad. Self-checks can checkout multiple items at once.
- Once all your items have been checked out you can select done and choose your receipt preference.
- Provide staff with your library card barcode number or picture ID.
- They will check the items out for you and offer a receipt.
How to return materials
Book returns are available inside during staffed hours and Self-Service Hours.
Book returns accept all regular sized items, not just books.
- Please bring oversized items to the service desk to be checked in during staffed hours.
You may return a Dakota County Library item to any Dakota County Library regardless of which location you checked it out at.
All Dakota County Library locations have outside book returns available 24 hours a day.
- If the return isn’t working, bring your items to the service desk during staffed hours or hold onto the items until your next visit. There are no late fees.

Borrowing from other library systems
Your Dakota County Library card can be registered at other Minnesota public libraries. Once registered, you can borrow from and return items to those systems directly. Minnesota libraries will accept most items for return to their home system. You agree to abide by the rules of the lending library, including the payment of overdue fees.
